Ordinarily studios do not release DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales results, but Universal Home Media has made an exception in the case of Despicable Me 2. On Tuesday the company said that the animated family film, which features the voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, had sold 4.5 million copies worth $80 million in its first week in release. Also included in that figure were digital downloads, which Universal said are likely to set a sales record. Theatrically the film earned $367 million domestically and $918 million worldwide, making it second only to Iron Man 3 among the top-grossing films of 2013. In a statement, Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, said, “Despicable Me 2′s astonishing results across both packaged media and digital underscores the resounding demand among consumers of all ages to have instant access to the film anytime, anywhere and cements it as one of the greatest must-own movies ever.”
