Three Oscar-contending films are due to make their debut at the box office this weekend, but none is expected to mount a significant challenge to Anchorman 2, which opened on Wednesday, and The Hobbit, which opened last weekend with $73.6 million in ticket sales. The three films are Sony’s American Hustle, directed by David O. Russell and starring Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner; Her, directed by Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson (as the voice of a computer that Phoenix’s character falls in love with); and Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, who created Mary Poppins. The Anchorman and Hobbit sequels are each expected to take in around $30-35 million, while the other three are each expected to earn in the neighborhood of $15-20 million.
