The mainstream media, long a thorn in the side of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, has overwhelmingly rallied to his defense against Gabriel Sherman’s new biography, The Loudest Voice in the Room. The New York Times‘s Janet Maslin called the book “disingenuous” and noted that it “may set a record for blind items and the untrustworthiness they engender.” She concluded: “If Mr. Sherman proves nothing else, it is that Mr. Ailes’s story warranted a more thoughtful telling than he has given it, or [that] it is likely to get again anytime soon. Consider this a great wasted opportunity.” Michael Wolff, who wrote a book about Ailes’s mentor and boss, Rupert Murdoch, summed up: “Sherman is not a very good writer.” Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik dismissed the book this way: “For all its promotional push, I don’t think The Loudest Voice in the Room will be long remembered — or even talked about past the short buzz life of most media these days.”
