Giving a different meaning to the term “movie piracy,” Sony’s Captain Phillips, about the 2009 hijacking of a ship by Somali pirates, grabbed first place on the DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales charts last week. Last week’s No. 1 film, The Butler, slipped to second place. Coming in third was the DVD debut of the Spanish-language comedy Instructions Not Included, which last fall became the top-grossing Spanish-language film of all time at the North American box. In fourth place was Universal’s Riddick, followed by Universal’s Despicable Me 2, which dropped to fifth place in its seventh week on home video. Also making their debut on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart were Universal’s Machete Kills, which flopped in its theatrical release, in sixth place and Sony’s Woody Allen dramedy Blue Jasmine in eleventh place.
