Sixteen years after it originally opened on Broadway, the stage version of Disney’s The Lion King remained the top-grossing show of 2013 with ticket sales of about $96.9 million, according to the Broadway League. Wicked, another musical inspired by a Hollywood movie (The Wizard of Oz), placed a close second on the list with about $95.3 million in receipts. (On Monday it was disclosed that Wicked, now in its tenth year, became the first Broadway musical ever to gross more than $3 million in a single week, taking in $3.2 million for nine performances during the Christmas holiday week.) Third on the list was The Book of Mormon with $90.4 million. Lion King, a production of Disney Theatrical Productions, also remains the No. 1-grossing stage production in London’s West End.
