NETWORK LAWYERS SEEK TO BAR AEREO LAWYERS FROM FILM ON X APPEAL

Lawyers representing the broadcast networks and other station owners have asked a federal appeals court not to allow Aereo to file an amicus brief supporting another streaming provider, FilmOn X. According to published reports, the lawyers claim in a filing that Aereo’s brief “essentially duplicates” FilmOn X’s brief. But reports suggest that what mostly concerns the broadcasters is that, should the court allow the amicus brief to be filed, Aereo’s lawyers could then ask to be included in oral arguments — and they have been far more effective than FilmOn X’s in making the case that its streaming technology does not infringe on the broadcasters’ copyrights.
