SALES OF BLU-RAY DISCS HIT A RECORD IN DECEMBER

Although reports earlier this week indicated that sales of DVDs and Blu-ray Discs were down 8 percent overall in 2013, a study by Home Media Research indicates that during December, Blu-ray set a record in sales and chalked up the three best weeks in its history. As reported by Home Media magazine, sales of discs in the high-definition format came to about $416 million in December, up from $404 during the same month in 2012. The week of Dec. 8-14 turned out to be the best in the format’s history, with sales of $127.1 million. The pre-Christmas week was close behind with $125.11 million. For all of 2013, Blu-ray accounted for 30.5 percent of revenue from all disc sales, up from 26.6 percent in 2012.
