WEATHER CHANNEL TO DIRECTV: LET CUSTOMERS CANCEL WITHOUT PENALTY

January 22, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

The Weather Channel has taken out full-page advertisements in several newspapers to publish an open letter to the DirecTV board of directors, urging the satellite broadcaster to allow customers who want to cancel their service without penalty. DirecTV canceled the Weather Channel on January 13 and replaced it with another service called WeatherNation. In the letter DirecTV claims that “many thousands have called your customer service centers asking to terminate their contracts since they are now getting less content for the same price. But DirecTV is threatening them with termination fees of $200 to $400.” DirecTV has refused to comment on the letter but has said in the past that its customers have many ways to access information about the weather and that the Weather Channel had filled many of its hours with reality programming and had moved away from its initial purpose to provide viewers with information about the weather at any time of the day.
