IMAX continues to grow bigger in China. The company said on Tuesday that it had its biggest single day’s receipts in China on Friday, the first day of the Chinese New Year, when ticket sales reached $1.8 million on 140 screens in the country. The box office was driven by the blockbuster hit The Monkey King, which earned $4.5 million on IMAX screens in China over the three-day weekend. “We’d like to congratulate our partners, Filmko Pictures and China Film Group, on making such a spectacular, action-fueled film that resonates so well with IMAX audiences,” said IMAX Entertainment CEO and IMAX Corp. senior EVP Greg Foster. “The Monkey King is a great example of the kind of performance that can happen when the right film is presented in The IMAX Experience, and we look forward to seeing how the rest of the holiday week unfolds.”
