FILMON TRIES AGAIN — WITHOUT NETWORK PROGRAMS

February 11, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

FilmOn, which, like Aereo, streams broadcast television shows to subscribers via the Internet, is launching a new service called Teleport Technology that allows users in New York to watch local TV shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Denver and other cities, the London Financial Times reported today (Tuesday). Unlike Aereo, however, it is offering the service free (it sells ads on its landing pages), and it cannot air network television shows — the result of a court order last September. Both services employ so-called antenna farms in which tiny antennas pick up broadcast signals over the air and funnel them to users via the Internet. The broadcast networks claim that the system infringes their copyrights, a position upheld by one court and dismissed by another. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to make a definitive decision in the matter sometime this year.
