SMOG HELPED GIVE SMAUG HUGE OPENING IN CHINA

Artisan Gateway, a leading consulting firm for U.S. film companies doing business in Asia, said on Tuesday that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took in about $33.7 million at the Chinese box office over the weekend. That amount was more than any other film earned in multiple markets overseas and more than any film earned in North America. The film outperformed the original Hobbit movie, An Unexpected Journey, which earned $19.4 million in its debut a year ago. Today’s (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times observed that smog may have helped Smaug. “Intense air pollution covering much of northern China may have helped drive patrons to theaters, as the government advised people to limit outdoor activities,” the Times reported.
