The Walt Disney Co. has wasted no time in announcing the name of the executive who will replace Anne Sweeney as co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of the Disney/ABC Television Group — even though her resignation does not become effective until next year. He is ABC News President Ben Sherwood, who, in four years, has earned props for lifting ABC’s morning program, Good Morning America, ahead of NBC’s Today, boosting the ratings for ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer, and garnering eight Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards for the news division. In the words of Sweeney herself, “Over the years, he has moved from success to success, and helped create a more vibrant, collaborative and powerful news division that embraces innovation and risk-taking.” In announcing the appointment Disney chairman Robert Iger said, “One of the things that I see in Ben is a strong sense of creativity and storytelling. I think that is applicable to his new job.” Iger may have been referring to the fact that besides carrying out his executive responsibilities for the company, Sherwood is also a published author, the writer of the novels The Man Who Ate the 747; Charlie St. Cloud: A Novel; The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.; and the non-fiction The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life.
