APPLE IN TALKS WITH COMCAST ABOUT A STREAMING TV SERVICE

Apple is in talks with Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator, to develop a streaming TV service employing Apple’s settop box but bypassing ordinary Internet congestion to avoid “hiccups” and buffering, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Monday), citing people familiar with the matter. Essentially, the deal would give Apple a separate line to users over “the last mile,” the final distance from the cable provider to the customer’s home. However, the discussions are reportedly ongoing and the Journal cited one person familiar with them as saying that the two sides aren’t close to an agreement. A possible stumbling block could be that Apple must acquire significant programming rights at a reasonable fee from producers before the project can be mounted.
