CHINA’S CENSORS CLAMPING DOWN ON STREAMED MOVIES

On the heels of reports that movies that were rejected by Chinese censors were being streamed online by websites that had bought the rights to do so, China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) said on Wednesday that those companies must obtain a license. SAPPRFT is regarded as China’s official movie and TV censor. The agency said that companies streaming video “should have qualified personnel examining the content, who meet the requirements for checking and have been trained by state or provincial Internet video and audio programs industry associations.” Unapproved films may not be broadcast on the Internet, the agency said. If they are, it warned, the websites doing so could be subject to fines and/or imprisonment.
