Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to his own Facebook page on Thursday to describe plans in the works for Facebook’s Connectivity Lab, which, he said, will be building “drones, satellites and lasers to deliver the Internet to everyone.” Although previous efforts to deliver the Internet via satellite have proved frustrating — it simply takes too long for signals to travel the distance to and from the satellites — efforts have long been underway to develop hybrid systems that could blanket large areas of the world from the sky. “Connecting the whole world will require inventing new technology too,” Zuckerberg wrote. “That’s what our Connectivity Lab focuses on.” He indicated that he has brought in many of the world’s leading experts in aerospace and communications technology, including from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research Center.”
