IN DEBUT, VIEWERS GIVE WEATHERMAN CHAMPION A COLD SHOULDER

Former ABC weatherman Sam Champion’s hopes of revitalizing The Weather Channel got off to a gloomy start as the premiere of his AMHQ drew just 207,000 total viewers of whom 64,000 were in the 25-54 age group. Not only did he not lift ratings for the channel’s 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. time period, but they declined significantly — down 12 percent among total audience and 14 percent for the demo versus the channel’s previous four-week average during the same time period. Champion has said that he wants to integrate non-weather news in the time period so viewers will stick with the channel and not have to go elsewhere to learn about major occurrences. However, he risks alienating those fans of the channel who expect to find out about the weather when they tune in and not have to stand by while the channel reports on, say, developments in Crimea.
