LACHLAN MURDOCH RETURNS TO NEWS CORP — AS HEIR TO THE THRONE?

March 26, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Rupert Murdoch has brought his eldest son Lachlan back into the fold, seven years after Lachlan, at age 35, departed News Corp and set off on a rocky course of his own. He will become with his father non-executive co-chairman of both the entertainment group 21st Century Fox and the new News Corp, consisting principally of the old News Corp’s newspapers. At the same time, Murdoch named his son James, 41, Fox’s co-COO with Chase Carey. The appointment brings James back into the public spotlight once again after his having left it during the phone hacking scandal in the U.K., when he presided over the shutdown of the 168-year-old tabloid News of the World. (His name has barely been mentioned in the current trial of two former Murdoch news executives in London.) In a statement, Rupert Murdoch said, “Lachlan is a strategic and talented executive with a rich knowledge of our businesses. … James has done an outstanding job driving our global television businesses. … This company has never been better positioned to capitalize on the increased global demand for quality storytelling and news, and our collective future has never been brighter.”
