The brouhaha over Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson’s comments about gay men did not encourage viewers to tune in to the A&E show to see what all the fuss was about. In fact, according to Nielsen, it did just the opposite. The season finale on Wednesday night drew six million viewers, down from 8.4 million for the last season and 9.6 million for the finale before that. Even more significant, the show dropped to 3.2 million viewers in the key 18-49 age group, down from 4.4 million in the previous season. Reporting on the decline, today’s (Friday) New York Times observed, “The decline may not have been directly related to the issue of Mr. Robertson’s comments, however, because the show was most likely ready to descend from its lofty ratings.”
