REPORT: AMAZON TO LAUNCH NEW TV NETWORK — ON THE WEB

Amazon is considering launching what in effect would be a new television network via the Internet — an advertising-supported array of original and licensed programs that would be available via streaming technology. The Wall Street Journal reports that the proposed service could launch in the coming months, although its sources cautioned that Amazon could delay it because of financial or other concerns. The service may be linked to a streaming-video device that Amazon reportedly plans to unveil in New York next week. Wired.com reported on the Journal‘s story under the headline “Amazon’s Bold Plan to Start a Last-Place TV Network” and observed that none of Amazon Prime’s original content has received the kind of critical praise that Netflix’s House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and other original shows have. Meanwhile, Amazon has issued a terse denial of the Journal‘s report. “We’re often experimenting with new things, but we have no plans to offer a free streaming media service,” an Amazon spokesman said.
