CBS’s Survivor edged out the first hour of Fox’s American Idol Wednesday night, as ratings for the talent contest continued to erode. The CBS reality show averaged 9.86 million viewers during the 8:00 p.m. hour, while Idol settled for 9.57 million. More significantly, Survivor attracted more young viewers in that hour than did Idol. In the 9:00 p.m. hour, CBS’s Criminal Minds took over as leader of the pack among total adults, pulling in more total viewers than Idol in that period, but falling short in the key 18-49 demo. The figures represented a new low for Idol. While the ratings are nevertheless substantial and are stronger than those for any other program on Fox, the show is expensive to produce, with the judges, host and producers reportedly receiving well over $10 million each per season.
