Another young-adult bestselling novel gets transposed to the screen this weekend, and the consensus of those in the know is that the premiere of Divergent will successfully launch a lucrative franchise for Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment, which produced the Twilight series. Box office pundits are predicting that Divergent will get off to a healthy start of around $60-65 million, a bit lower than the $70 million that the first installment of the Twilight saga earned over its opening weekend in 2008. Reviews of the movie have been mostly terrible, but film critics are clearly not in the target demo for such films. Also opening this weekend — and garnering far better reviews — will be Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted. Forecasters say it should do about as well as 2011’s The Muppets, which opened with $29 million.
