Comcast’s Universal Studios is planning to open a 51-acre theme park near Tongzhou, a suburb of Beijing, according to reports appearing on some Chinese news sites today (Wednesday). According to the reports, a new unit, Universal Creative, a division of Universal Parks and Resorts, plans to break ground for the park in the fourth quarter of 2014, aimed at a 2018 opening. The company is partnering with Beijing Tourism Group, which is providing the site for the project and participating in the funding. Universal currently operates two other Asian theme parks, one in Singapore, the other in Osaka, Japan. Each is reportedly a popular destination for Chinese tourists.
