Television broadcasters brought their case against Aereo to the U.S. Supreme Court today (Tuesday). Aereo is the company that wants to provide the broadcasters’ telecasts to subscribers over the Internet via individual dime-sized antennas. Various consumer groups and software companies have filed amicus briefs supporting the startup, which is backed by veteran entertainment executive Barry Diller. On the other hand, broadcasters have enlisted the support of several top film and TV producers, the major sports leagues, and various industry labor groups. The U.S. government is also siding with the broadcasters. Should the broadcasters prevail, Aereo would be forced to shut down its service, which is currently available in 11 cities. Should Aereo win, several analysts have observed, the face of television could be forever changed.
