Preview screenings Thursday night of Captain America: The Winter Soldier brought in a solid $10.2 million, leading some analysts to up their estimates of how much the film will take in over the weekend. “It stands to reason that we’re possibly looking at around $107-$125 million for the weekend,” wrote Scott Mendelson on Forbes magazine’s website. Pamela McClintock at the Hollywood Reporter was a bit more conservative, writing that it should “fly past $90 million” and adding, “Some even wonder if it could approach $100 million. Either way, that would easily make it the biggest April opening in history, far surpassing the current record-holder, Fast Five, which brought in 85.7 million in 2011. Daily Variety observed that after earning more than $75 million overseas last week, the film will be expanding into China, the world’s second-largest market, this weekend, as well as Russia and Australia. It will also be opening on 668 IMAX screens worldwide, a company record.
