China’s State Administration of Press Publication, Radio, Film and Television — the country’s official censor — has ordered the country’s four major streaming websites to remove The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, NCIS and The Practice. China’s video websites had been virtually free of the kind of strict oversight that has characterized China’s TV regulation. No official reason was given for the crackdown. A notice on the home page for each of the yanked shows merely stated, “We’re sorry for being unable to provide video services now due to policy reasons.” Video websites in China have been growing exponentially largely as a result of the fact that they offer content that is more appealing than those that censors allow broadcasters to present. In an interview with China Daily, Peng Kan, a consultant at Legend Media in China, commented, “I think that the advantages Chinese video website enjoyed thanks to looser examination will probably come to an end.”
