Indicating that he aims to “build some real market share” in the growing business of scripted online programming, Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav has told the New York Times that he has formed a partnership with Imagine Entertainment partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer to found New Form, a digital studio that plans to create short — three- to six-minute — episodic videos along the lines of those presented by Will Ferrell’s comedy website FunnyorDie.com. In an interview with today’s (Thursday) New York Times, Grazer said, “We want to connect with a scalable amount of people and have an impact on the culture.” It will have to do so on a relatively tiny budget, the Times indicated. Total funds allocated to the site will be less than $5 million annually, the newspaper said, citing a person briefed on the investment.
