When weekend box-office estimates were released on Sunday, the faith-based Heaven Is for Real came in third with $21.5 million. But someone apparently did not take into due consideration the effect of Easter on such a movie. As it turned out, the Sony film, starring Greg Kinnear, wound up with $22.5 million, putting it in second place behind Disney’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier with $25.5 million and ahead of Fox’s Rio 2, with $22.1 million for the three days. The film had cost $12 million to produce. Meanwhile, it was reported that the Captain America sequel brought in another $18 million in China, bringing its total after 17 days to just under $100 million and once again underlining the importance of the Chinese box office. Also Johnny Depp’s Transcendence opened with $10.65 million in China, just a tad under the $11.20 million that it earned in its U.S. debut.
