Fifty-one years after he walked down Cannes’s famous red carpet for the screening of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2, in which he starred, Marcello Mastroianni will be looking over that red carpet again as the official poster of next month’s Cannes Film Festival is raised above the Palais de Festivals. The poster, the creation of Hervé Chigioni and his graphic designer, Gilles Frappier, shows a close-up “photogram” of Mastroianni from 8 1/2 with the actor looking over a pair of sunglasses and tapping his nose. In a statement the festival said that the photo is intended to “celebrate a cinema that is free and open to the world, acknowledging once again the artistic importance of Italian and European cinema through one of its most stellar figures.” Mastroianni died in Paris in 1996 at the age of 72; Fellini in Rome in 1993 at the age of 73.
