Oliver Stone, who has frequently been critical of American policies and politics in his films, has told the Chinese that it’s about time that they do so about their own history. Appearing at the Beijing International Film Festival, Stone indicated that he himself has attempted to makes films in China about Mao Tse-tung, the Cultural Revolution and the Beijing Olympics, and has run into a wall of red tape. Moderator Zhang Xun, head of China Film Coproduction Corp., responded that Chinese oversight is necessary to protect local audiences. “A script needs to be what this country wants to show.” Stone shot back, “How this country was built, you’re not dealing with it. …We need to see the history of China. You talk about protecting the people from their own history.” Stone said that most Hollywood co-productions with China amount to “using Chinese actors in the background because [studios] want money.”
