PUNDITS: CAPTAIN AMERICA TO HOLD ON TO NO. 1 AT BOX OFFICE

April 11, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

After raking in $95 million last weekend to set a box-office record for April, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will likely repeat again this weekend, even if it loses more than half that number of ticket buyers, analysts say. Its only major challenge appears to be the animated Rio 2, which most box-office pundits predict will earn around $40 million, about what the original earned when it opened in 2011. (That film turned out to be a far bigger hit overseas than it was domestically, and the sequel is also expected to follow suit.) Also opening this weekend is the Kevin Costner football flick Draft Day, but the fact that it’s the beginning of spring and that football movies don’t necessarily attract football fans and that the movie has received mediocre reviews will all probably conspire to keep ticket sales down to around $10-14 million. The horror film Oculus will probably take in about the same amount, the analysts say.
