REALITY SHOWS AND DOCS TO MOVE INTO CNN’S 9:00 P.M. TIME SLOT

CNN has decided to drop its traditional news/interview format at 9:00 p.m. and substitute reality TV-type shows and documentaries in its place. “There’s a pool of advertisers for news, and there’s a pool of advertisers for broader programing, and we want to be able to tap into both,” CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker told Adweek. The new shows will range from a how-to program about tackling dirty jobs around the house hosted by Mike Rowe to one examining whether Jesus ever really existed. The time period will also occasionally feature one-hour documentaries, including one based of the autobiography of film critic Roger Ebert and another about a transgender former Navy officer. In a separate interview with the HuffingtonPost.com, Zucker said that the traditional talk-show format at 9:00 p.m. is “no longer viable.” Over the past year, he said, he concluded that “a show in the tradition of what Larry King had always done didn’t necessarily make sense for us going forward.”
