Captain America 2 and Rio 2 also squared off at the overseas box office — with Rio coming out on top. Both films performed strongly, with Rio flying to the top with $62.3 million, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier settled for second place but with a whopping $60.6 million. Some analysts had previously expressed skepticism that the character, who is almost literally draped in the American flag, would appeal to overseas audiences, given the degree of anti-American sentiments in many areas of the world. But veteran Rentrak box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the Associated Press, “The traditional rules just don’t apply anymore. It’s really about that Marvel brand. Captain America can play in Peoria just as well as Hong Kong.” In its fourth week of international release, Noah also performed surprisingly well overseas, bringing in $36.2 million. Meanwhile, the Frozen phenomenon showed no sign of diminishing in Japan, where it led all other films in its fifth week with $8.26 million, dropping only 1.2 percent from the previous weekend. The movie has grossed $91.2 million in that country. Its foreign gross now stands at $713.1 million and its worldwide gross at $1.113 billion.
