SIMON COWELL’S BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT SETS RECORD

In contrast to the plunging ratings for American Idol, the U.K. talent contest Britain’s Got Talent drew its highest ratings ever for a season debut on Saturday night. The ITV show, produced by Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment and Fremantle Media with Cowell as one of the judges, featured an astonishing dance performance by 79-year-old grandmother Sarah “Paddy” Jones that immediately elicited comparisons with Susan Boyle’s surprising performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” in 2009. The telecast averaged 11.1 million viewers, representing 47.3 percent of the entire British TV audience, up 6 percent from last year’s record premiere with 10.5 million. At one point Saturday’s telecast peaked with 12.3 million viewers. Britain’s Got Talent debuted in 2007 with 4.9 million viewers.
