VON TRIER NO LONGER PERSONA NON GRATA AT CANNES

April 17, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Cannes Film Festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux has moved to defuse the combustible relationship between the festival and Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. Asked about von Trier’s T-shirt bearing the words “Persona non grata” that he wore at the Berlin Film Festival in February, Frémaux told reporters that after he saw it on the news, he called von Trier and asked him if he could get one. The words on the shirt referred to the festival’s official censure of von Trier after he joked about Hitler and the Nazis at the Cannes festival in 2012 — remarks that clearly backfired. Speaking to reporters following his announcement of this year’s competing films, Frémaux said that Von Trier told him that he was glad he now regarded his comments as a joke and promised to send him a T-shirt. However, Frémaux added, “I’m still waiting for it.”
