WOMEN LIFT THE OTHER WOMAN TO NO. 1

Years ago, theater owners often used to pack their houses with women with regular “Ladies Day” ticket specials. No special prices for The Other Woman were offered to women over the weekend, but the studio said that more than 75 percent of the audience for the film was female, many of whom apparently responding to its “girls’ night out” marketing campaign. The film opened at No. 1 at the box office with $24.8 million, taking over first place as Captain America: The Winter Soldier dropped a modest 37 percent in its fourth week to $16.2 million. (It will likely be clobbered by its Marvel stable mate Spider-Man next weekend.) Two other new releases fared poorly. Brick Mansions, starring Paul Walker, the last movie that he completed before his death last November, opened with just $9.5 million, while the horror film The Quiet Ones tanked with just $3.9 million.
