24 RETURNS — BUT CAN IT ROLL BACK THE CLOCK?

The return of Fox’s 24, subtitled “Live Another Day,” after four years averaged 7.97 million viewers Monday night. The figure fell far short of the dominating numbers that the show received during its previous seasons, most especially in 2006-07, when it averaged 13.78 million viewers. In its last season, its ratings had fallen to 9.31 million. In her review in the New York Times, Alessandra Stanley, calling the series “groundbreaking,” pointed out that it was responsible for cultivating so many copy-cat dramas that “much of what seemed new when the series began now seems dated.” She concluded: “24 changed television drama, but it hasn’t changed, and television has moved on.”
