AFTER “STEALTH MEETINGS” WITH IOC, NBC LANDS OLYMPICS THROUGH 2032

Underlining the high-stakes gambling that broadcasters are willing to engage in to land popular sports attractions, NBCUniversal on Wednesday said that it had agreed to pay $7.65 billion to carry the six Olympic Games — Winter and Summer — from 2022 to 2032. That works out to about $1.3 billion for each. Sports broadcasts have become especially valuable to broadcasters not only because they draw big audiences but also because most households watch them live and are therefore unable to skip commercials, as they can with shows recorded with DVRs. The Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday) that the IOC awarded the contract to NBC “after holding stealth meetings” with execs from NBC Universal and corporate parent Comcast over the last six months. The newspaper said that the IOC did not entertain proposals from NBC rivals such as ESPN, Fox Sports and CBS.
