The Chinese box office will be top-heavy with Hollywood films in June with eight of the — count ’em — 21 features being released next month described as “foreign” productions. They include: Transformers: Age of Extinction, Godzilla, Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow. Each of those films will be released on consecutive weeks, so that they won’t have to compete against each other. Each is also expected to perform strongly at the Chinese box office, although questions have been raised about how well Godzilla will do, given the growing tensions between China and Japan that has clearly affected sales in China of Japanese-labeled goods. Forbes magazine has observed that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have already done their best to sidestep the issue. “This time around the creature was born in the Philippines,” the magazine noted, adding that “the first scene of destruction [is] a Japanese nuclear plant.”
