CNN FINALLY CONCEDES EARTH’S NOT COMING TO AN END IN 30 YEARS

In yet another case of a fraudulent, sensational story being picked up by a major news organization without the most cursory vetting, CNN reported on its iReport page that, in the words of its headline, “Giant asteroid possibly on collision course with Earth.” According to the article, the 10-mile-wide asteroid could hit Earth on March 35, 2041 and destroy life as we know it. (The date alone should have raised red flags over the report’s legitimacy.) On Monday, 22 hours after it first appeared, the report was yanked, with the following “producer note” appearing in its stead: “NASA has confirmed via email that this story is false. The iReport has been removed.” (CNN has described iReports as an experiment in citizen journalism.) However, it had already been viewed by a quarter of a million people, shared by 22,000, and posted on countless websites. As expected, conservative websites pounced. “With all of the extraordinary disinformation circulating within the mainstream media already, CNN exhibits a very telling media failure in allowing such media hoaxes to circulate from a supposedly credible source,” said ConservativeFocus.com. CNN has not commented.
