he Motion Picture Association of America is seeking help from the U.S. Congress in alerting visitors to pirate video sites that much of the advertising that appears on those seats presents a threat to users. According to, which tracks BitTorrent usage, the MPAA has sent a letter to the Senate Homeland Security & Government Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, saying in part: “As the Senators consider steps to address the safety and security of online advertisements, we hope they will also examine the extensive growth of these hazards on sites that offer infringing movies, television shows and other creative content.” Many of the ads on the pirate sites, the MPAA observed link to malware or tout credit-card scams. “Unfortunately, these illicit sites continue to attract large numbers of Americans, especially young people who might not be aware of the harms they could easily encounter,” the organization said.
