NETFLIX ALMOST AS BIG AS A NETWORK BROADCASTER

May 22, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Netflix subscribers now stream an average of 103 minutes per day — putting it “within striking distance” of the broadcast networks’ average per viewer, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield has calculated. Greenfield based his figure on Netflix’s claim that it streamed 6.5 billion hours globally to subscribers in the first quarter of this year, 75 percent of those hours domestically. Netflix already surpassed any cable network in October 2013. Domestic usage was up 18 percent from the same quarter a year ago, while international usage was up 32 percent. Greenfield also estimated that international usage will increase significantly in the coming year. Underscoring his analysis were reports on Wednesday that Netflix plans to launch in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg later this year.
