Wheel of Fortune‘s Pat Sajak, a former TV weatherman, apparently intentionally stirred up a hornets’ nest on Tuesday when he tweeted, “I now believe global warming alarmists are unpatriotic racists knowingly misleading for their own ends. Good night.” What patriotism or racism have to do with global warming is probably a mystery to most, and Sajak’s tweet left many people scratching their heads. His remarks come days after it was reported that the planet just recorded the warmest April in history. Sajak’s tweet received scattered applause from those who disagree with the scientific consensus that global warming poses a deadly threat to humanity (or that it exists at all). On Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze blog, one person using the handle, “high school drop out,” wrote “Pat is right! … Now we’re being called ‘Deniers’ in order to demonize us.” But it also triggered a backlash from those who regarded his remarks as earnest — in particular climate scientists like Michael Mann, who wrote, “This aint the Wheel of Fortune. If we lose this game … all humanity pays the price.” Still others questioned whether Sajak was serious about his over-the-top “unpatriotic racists” remark. Sajak appeared to suggest that he was not when he posted this tweet late Tuesday: “Sometimes it’s fun to poke a stick in a hornets’ nest just to hear the buzzing.”
