Another popular kids TV show is set to morph into a movie, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Lionsgate and Haim Saban’s Saban Brands announced today (Wednesday) that they plan to develop and produce a live-action feature based on the characters created by Saban 20 years ago. Terms of the deal between Lionsgate and Saban were not disclosed, but for Lionsgate it holds the potential to provide it with yet another money-making franchise (it already has rights to the Twilight series as well as The Hunger Games and Divergent) and also put it into the consumer products business. Saban claims that Power Rangers toys, videogames and other merchandise have produced more than $6 billion in retail sales. Today’s announcement made no mention of the fact that Saban already produced a Power Rangers movie in 1995, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie, but although it was screened in a few hundred theaters, it was primarily produced for television.
