Primetime news shows nearly always garner bigger ratings among total adult viewers than they do among the the 18-49 age group. Such was not the case, however, when it came to Brian Williams’s interview with former NSA contractor Edward Snowden Wednesday night. The special, titled Inside the Mind of Edward Snowden, was tops in its time period among the younger demo with a 1.3 rating and a 4 share. It attracted 5.91 million total viewers. But a repeat of CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation drew more, 6.14 million viewers. New York Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley was among those critical of Williams’s handling of the interview, writing that he “did a good job of letting Edward J. Snowden say what he wanted to say.” She faulted Williams for not asking more pointed questions, “and he also didn’t follow up on some contestable assertions — at least not on the edited version shown Wednesday night.”
