The Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks set to conquer China. It opened on Sunday following a blackout period in which no foreign films were allowed access to the Chinese box office and promptly recorded $10.1 million in ticket sales — marking the biggest one-day opening for any film ever in the world’s second-largest movie market. On its second day it added an estimated $5 million — but that was on a Monday. Even in the U.S., the world’s biggest movie market, a $5-million Monday would be regarded as impressive. Moreover, the limitation on the number of Hollywood films that can be shown on the mainland ensures that ASM2 will have little tentpole competition for a while. While it is due to face Godzilla in North America beginning on May 16, it will have clear sailing in China until June 13, when the giant lizard finally lands there. It’s biggest competition is a Chinese-language rom-com, My Old Classmate, which brought in $17.7 million over the three-day weekend to lift its 10-day total to a solid $52.3 million.
