THEY’VE BEEN SNEAKING UP ON YOU — TV COMMERCIALS, THAT IS

If you’ve been thinking that you’re watching more commercials these days than you used to, you’re right. According to a new study by Nielsen Research, the ratings firm, over the last five years, the broadcast networks have gone from an average of 13 minutes and 25 seconds of commercial time per hour to 14 minutes and 15 seconds. They’re also airing more commercials — shorter ones — cramming more 15-second spots into commercial breaks that are crowding out 30-second ones. On cable TV the average has risen from 14 minutes and 27 seconds per hour in 2009 to 15 minutes and 38 seconds last year. More commercials during longer commercial breaks have apparently paid off for the industry. Nielsen said that advertisers spent $78 billion on ad time on TV in 2013 versus $64 billion in 2009.
