If being the network that carried the Super Bowl this year gave Fox a big boost in quarterly profit versus last year, as it reported on Wednesday, then being the network that did not carry it had the opposite effect on CBS. In a conference call with reporters and analysts on Thursday, CBS chief Les Moonves commented that if the Super Bowl, which it carried in 2013, were removed from the books, “our revenue would have been a record.” As it was, CBS’s fourth-quarter earnings were off just 5 percent from the year-ago quarter. Speaking with reporters and analysts during a conference call on Thursday, Moonves also expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will rule in CBS’s favor in its dispute with Aereo. If it does not, he suggested, CBS might do the same thing that Aereo now does — use its own array of tiny antennas to offer its programs to subscribers — at a price.
