BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT NABS HALF OF U.K. AUDIENCE FOR FINALE

Some 10.7 million viewers, representing more than half of all those watching television on Saturday night, tuned in for the season finale of Britain’s Got Talent. That number would have been terrific even in the U.S., but it was downright sensational in Britain, whose population is one-fifth the size of the U.S.; i.e. it would have been comparable to 50 million U.S. viewers. Britain’s Guardian newspaper said that the talent contest, produced by Simon Cowell, who also serves as a judge, hit a peak of 12.5 million viewers. Nevertheless, the show drew slightly fewer viewers than the season finale did a year ago, when it averaged 11.1 million viewers and a 51.4 percent share. This year’s winners, a five-member group of singers calling themselves Collabro, were described in press reports as “an operatic boy band.”
