Maleficent turned out to be pretty magnificent at the box office over the weekend, coming in at the high end of expectations with an estimated $70 million domestically. The Disney family film starring Angelina Jolie hauled in another $100 million overseas. Last week’s No. 1 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, plunged 64 percent to $32.6 million. In third place, Universal’s A Million Ways to Die in the West, Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Western and the only other film to open wide over the weekend, was saddled with blazing — no, incendiary — censure from critics and a mediocre B Cinemascore, to wind up with a disappointing $17.1 million. Analysts say that younger moviegoers gave it a wide berth, with 72 percent of those going to see it aged 25 or older. Warner Bros.’ Godzilla also saw a huge ratings collapse as it fell 61 percent to $12.2 million to place fourth. Rounding out the top five was Warner Bros. Blended, which collected $8.4 million.
