Pharrell Williams and Beyoncé were the big winners Sunday night at the BET Awards, which honors black musicians, actors and athletes and is hosted cable giant Black Entertainment Television. The awards ceremony, broadcast from Los Angeles was called "the Black World Cup" by host Chris Rock. Lifetime Achievement winner Lionel Richie received the most sustained applause for his performance of "All Night Long." Accepting his award, Richie said, poignantly, "Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a god given gift and not a category, and out of the box is the magical place where true talent goes to thrive and breathe." The historical drama 12 Years A Slave swept the top film categories.
